Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) remains a major threat to global health security, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries.

The Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship (CwPAMS) programme, funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care’s Fleming Fund and delivered by Global Health Partnerships (GHP, formerly THET) and the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA), has shown how targeted investment in Health Partnerships (HPs) can drive measurable improvements in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), infection prevention and control (IPC), and medicines optimisation.

Working across eight African countries and the UK it has strengthened AMS governance, improved the collection and use of data to guide clinical decision‑making and continuous quality improvement (cQI) and equipped thousands of health workers across clinical, laboratory, and community settings with practical stewardship skills.

The impact report highlights how CwPAMS has evolved into a strategic platform for sustainable, system‑wide change, influencing national policy dialogue, improving professional recognition and leadership of pharmacists, generating tools and resources with long‑term utility, and fostering enduring institutional partnerships between UK and African countries.
