The Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP), funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, was extended in November 2024 into three new regions: Ethiopia, Malawi, and Somaliland, running from 2025-26. The launch of the GHWP in these three regions will support Health Partnerships to address nationally and locally identified Health Workforce priorities, helping to build robust health systems capable of addressing the diverse health needs of their populations to ensure optimal health outcomes for all individuals.

The GHWP has four programmatic outcomes:

  1. Partnerships contributing towards improved health workforce leadership capacity aligned with health workforce strategies, that will support reduction in gender inequalities.
  2. Partnerships aligning with and contributing towards retention and wellbeing strategies.
  3. Improved number and quality of training opportunities for health workers.
  4. Co-developed and documented learning on health workforce interventions shared with key national and international stakeholders

The successful Health Partnerships embody GHP’s Principles of Partnership, including strategic collaboration, mutual respect and alignment with national priorities to ensure that both partners benefit from bilateral learning initiatives and pooled skills and knowledge. The sustainability of projects is considered, and engagement with key national and regional stakeholders is essential to ensuring the long-term success of GHWP interventions.

As the fund manager, GHP has offered Health Partnerships between the UK, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Somaliland, the opportunity to bid for large grants of between £100,000 and £200,000 and small grants up to £50,000. Global South- Global South partnerships between Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Ethiopia, Malawi, Somaliland, will also be awarded in both small and large grant categories.

These grants will run from 1st April 2025 until 31st January 2026.
